Language Style Used in FolkloreWritten in Senior High School’s English Textbook

Abstract

Communication is needed in every aspect of human life. It is used to deliver information and to exchange ideas. In a way of communicating and interacting, different language styles may be used to deliver the message clearly. The choice of language style used is influenced by some factors such as setting, participants, relationships, topics, etc. This present research aimed to find out the most language style used in folklore written in Senior High School’s English textbook of Grade XI. The book is written by The Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. To describe the phenomenon based on the data source, the descriptive method was carried out in this present research. From the analysis, the researcher found that there were three types of language style used in this folklore namely: consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. The total of conversations collected from all characters’ utterances in this folklore was 13 conversations. Based on the frequency of the language styles used, consultative style got 46%, casual style got 31%, and intimate style got 23%. To conclude, the most used language style in this folklore was the consultative style.
